These hard plastic tools are great for working with trim pieces and pay for themselves many times over the first time you scratch a trim piece by trying to remove it with a screwdriver.

To remove the ashtray, partially open it and slip a trim removal tool between the plastic surround and the rear of the ashtray. There are two hooks on each side of the ashtray red arrows. The vent, vertical diverters and control piece will all come out as one piece. The horizontal diverters have a habit of slipping out from their grooves and the small retaining band that keeps them together. If you are going to be putting this back together you are going to need patience.

Place the diverter vanes back into their slots making sure the nubs on the ends face opposite directions red arrows.

Place the piece in a large vice or find a way to gently squeeze it together to keep the vanes from falling out. Next reinstall the band and reinstall the vent. This will release the knob from the shaft. You can now pull the knob, boot and trim piece straight up and off the shaft red arrow. Next, remove the surround around the shifter. Start up in the corners red arrows and pry up the trim piece.

There are two clips on the front of the piece and two hooks on the rear. By prying up the front you can slide the hooks out from the rear by sliding the piece forward. You can see the clip and how it sits in the plastic mount red arrow. While there is a small clip in the center of the trim piece you do not want to pry from the middle or you run the risk of breaking the trim piece. Open the center armrest. Use a T20 Torx to remove the single Torx screw behind the knob red arrow. Pry up on the trim piece with your trim removal tool and then slide the trim piece forward and off the console red arrow.

Next, remove the T20 Torx screw in front of the control knob red arrow.

The wiring runs up to the left side of the shifter housing. Use a pick or small flathead screwdriver and release the tab and separate the wiring connections red arrow.
